An important note on Jeju’s updated bus system and this blog post
From August 2017, Jeju Island implemented a new city and intercity bus system. It increased the number of buses in service, while simplifying the routes, fees and numbering system.
Consequently, the contents of this previously published blog post may have changed. We therefore would kindly request that you consult this page for new bus maps in English on VisitJeju.net, and this page on our blog for a chart of the old and new bus route numbers.
If you read Korean, then the province’s official bus system website is a useful and up-to-date resource. We hope you’ll enjoy your travels on Jeju Island!
Yongmeori (Dragon Head) Coast is where Sanbangsan stretches into the ocean, looking as if a dragon’s head is submerging under water. Even if you cannot see it, the rock formations will amaze you.
Address: 218-10, Sanbang-ro, Andeok-myeon, Seogwipo-si, Jeju-do (제주특별자치도 서귀포시 안덕면 산방로 218-10)
Directions by bus: You can take bus 702 from the Jeju Intercity Bus Terminal or Seogwipo Intercity Bus Terminal. Get off at Sanbangsan, and walk for a few minutes.
I hope you bring your walking shoes if you want to explore Yongmeori Coast. These big rocks serve as steps for you to walk down, but there are no handrails.
As you stand between the big boulders, you can see the unique formation of the rocks. These wave patterns were created from layers of sandstone that piled up over millions of years.
How mighty these rocks are! One feels so small looking up at them. Our human life is so short when compared to the endless years that these silent pillars endured.
Because this area was formed by underwater volcanic explosions, there are a number of caves and holes in the rocks.
Along your trek down to the seashore, you will be able to see a a Hamel Castaway Memorial built in remembrance of Hendrik Hamel. Netherland-born Hamel was shipwrecked in Jeju with 35 crew mates in 1635, and he ended up living in Korea for 13 years.
You can walk from Sanbangsan all the way down to Yongmeori Coast, where you will see a dark sand beach. Sometimes you can see women divers, haenyeo, sell sea cucumbers along the shore.
After a long walk being surrounded by giant rocks, it’s a welcome relief to be near the open waters!
