This weekend we had some oddly cool weather for early April. But it was also very windy, which is much less odd. In fact, it’s one of Jeju Island’s Samda “three plenties” (wind, rocks and women). These marigolds were cowering behind a traditional Jeju stone wall, which for centuries has protected Jeju’s people and crops from the strong ocean wind. JTO Global SNS Content Event features charismatic presentations by 14 foreign students The JTO Global SNS Content Event was held Friday at our offices in the Jeju Welcome Center here in Jeju City. We invited the winning contributors — 14 foreign students studying in Korea — to the island to give their presentations, followed by a weekend of Free Independent Travel for themselves. It was wonderful to meet everyone and hear what they had to say about their cultural comparisons and impressions of their country and Jeju and Korea. We heard about Malaysia, Indonesia, The Philippines, China, Vietnam, Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The panel of judges, including professors at Halla University, Jeju International University, and an official from the Jeju Provincial Government, and the head of the Tourism Industry Dept. of the Jeju Tourism Organization heard their presentations in the afternoon. First prize — a 500,000 won Duty Free Shopping coupon — went to a charismatic team from the Philippines who run a blog and Instagram channel “Our Korean Story” (ourkoreanstory.wordpress.com, www.instagram.com/ourkoreanstory). They presented a clever video presentation and provided insights into what makes their country’s social media tick… did you know there’s an online trend in the Philippines called “selfie muna bago (https://goo.gl/oH6U2a),” or “before selfies”? The second prize of a 300,000 won DF coupon went to another participant from the Philippines, who highlighted how DIY travelling is a thing in both her country and Korea. And the third prize, a 100,000 won DF coupon was awarded to participant from Japan, who drew a comparison between Jeju and Japan in travellers’ love of experience programs (strawberry picking, fishing) and outdoor activities like glamping. Hamdeok is one of the largest and safest beaches on the island. Not only is it beautiful from the shoreline, but there is a pleasant and accessible climb up to Seoubong that affords visitors with a panoramic view of the area.
