Jeju Province announced on Saturday night that one new COVID-19 case has been confirmed. In this instance, a woman in her 30s who was in the United States returned to Jeju Island and her parents’ home.
She was asymptomatic when she landed at Incheon International Airport on May 29th at around 5:30 p.m. She transferred via Gimpo Airport onto a Jeju-bound flight, arriving at around 10:20 p.m. on the same day.
She told authorities that in order to return to Korea she had taken a COVID-19 test in the United States on May 21st and was negative.
As per protocols for all arriving international passengers, she said she wore a mask the entire time upon her return to Korea and was taken home in the family car to begin immediate self-quarantine. She did not go out until getting the mandatory follow-up COVID-19 test for arriving international travelers at Seogwipo Health Center at 2 p.m. the next day, Saturday, May 30th.
She was tested at the Health Center at 3 p.m. and a confirmed diagnosis was determined at 7:20 p.m. She was transferred by ambulance to Jeju National University Hospital in Jeju City, and is listed as asymptomatic at present.
A prompt epidemiological investigation overnight using CCTV and credit card details determined that the patient only came into close contact with two family members and that she had worn a mask in public at all times. Authorities are now contacting passengers on the aircraft she traveled in.
