Provincial officials announced that emergency text messages issued by Jeju Province will be available in English from September.
The objective is to provide fast and accurate COVID-19 information to non-Korean speakers residing in Jeju.
The program will send out emergency texts in English within an hour of their being sent in Korean (during business hours) and by 10 a.m. the next day in case of overnight or weekend announcements.
Of the 9,700 people who make up the Jeju Global Education City, some 15 percent, or about 1,500 people, are non-Koreans. These individuals can sign up for the service through their individual schools/employers.
This issue of English-language emergency information was brought up earlier in the year and discussions were held with the Provincial Government, the Provincial Office of Education (PoE), the Jeju Free International City Development Center (JDC), Jeju’s international schools, and other related organizations.
It was noted that emergency messages issued by the Ministry of Public Administration and Security are not part of this provincial government service.
