The growing problem of marine waste washing up on Jeju’s shores has prompted provincial officials to introduce a new island-wide coastal clean-up and conservation program for 2021.

In an announcement this week, officials said that starting in March, some 173 workers will be hired for a six-month contract to conduct marine environment conservation and clean-up activities.

The total cost of the project is estimated at 2.3 billion won, with 1.15 billion won coming from national coffers.

Candidates aged 19 or older will be selected based on physical fitness and interview tests. The job will entail an 8-hour day coordinating and working with clean-up crews and pay approximately 2.1 million won a month.

One hundred workers will concentrate on the northern part of the island called Jeju City, while the other 73 will work in the southern region of Seogwipo City.
