[Jeju Today] A volcanic cone with a spectacular Seogwipo view: Gogeunsan

A sped-up view north of Hallasan Mountain from the peak of Gogeunsan Mountain

Gogeunsan Mountain is an easy drive/climb just north of Seogwipo City. There is ample parking a short walk below the entrance, and after a pleasant peripatetic climb of 854 stairs, you get access to wonderful views of the south coast.

The volcanic crater has Silver Grass growing in it at the moment.

Walk along the lip of the volcanic crater and admire its 360 degree views of the south side of the island, the forest cover, pristine crater, and make use of the observation tower and numerous benches to stop and make marvelous memories! There are two high-powered binoculars available to the public as well.

The forest around the crater lip makes for a very pleasant (and easy) nature walk.

Pro tip: If you walk up Gogeunsan as quietly as you can and listen for the sound of cracking branches … you may be able to spot a wild deer grazing in the undergrowth (as I did today).

Please note: During the COVID-19 pandemic, traveling to Jeju is problematic. In the meantime, we are highlighting some of the island’s attractions. We sincerely hope you will visit Jeju once it is safe to do so.
