[Updates to follow today, July 1]

Late last night provincial officials announced that a Gwangju resident who came to Jeju by ferry and traveled the island from June 22nd to the 24th was later diagnosed with COVID-19 by health authorities in Gwangju Metropolitan City.

Adding urgency to this incident, health officials said that the individual told authorities in Gwangju that upon their June 22 arrival on Jeju they experienced symptoms including lethargy, diarrhea, and a loss of appetite for the duration of their Jeju trip.

Authorities have begun an in-depth epidemiological investigation and we will update this post as additional information is made available today.

The individual and four acquaintances took their private car by ferry to travel around the island for the duration of their trip.

The individual in question was subsequently admitted to hospital in Gwangju City with symptoms of pneumonia on June 27th and tested positive for COVID-19 yesterday, June 30th.

Note: As of the morning of July 1, Jeju Island has had 19 confirmed COVID-19 cases (16 of whom have made full recoveries.) Some 63 individuals are under medical observation. Another 107 who have been in contact with someone with the virus are in self-quarantine (this number may change later today.) Some 275 people are in mandatory self-quarantine after arriving from overseas. There have been no deaths.
